MASSAGE AWAY WORRIES.... and boost the immune system

A soothing backrub isn't just a relaxing way to relieve fatigue and stress - it's good for your health. After Diane Zeitlin, LMT, gave hour-long massages to a bunch of anxious medical students the day before a major test, she found that the rubdowns calmed students down but geared their immune systems up, as she reported at the recent annual meeting of the American Massage Therapy Association. Blood tests showed that students' white blood cells and natural killer cells - immune system fighters which attack viruses and tumors in the body - rose in number and activity in response to the massage therapy. The students also noted feeling less anxious about their exam.
